Slow loading websites (broadband)?

I'm on a 1MB broadband connection (using Firefox as my browser) and while most websites load quickly, a fair few seem to load the title image, then hang for 20-30 secs and after that time the whole page appears. Examples of websites that hang are https://www.xe.com/ucc and https://www.tweakxp.com.

I have done speed & ping tests and both results are reasonable. What else could be causing these pages to hang for so long? Note: both the above websites seem to hang in Firefox and IE6.

It could be something like third party adverts on the page are loading slowly for you.

I find that some forums/sites I visit have a tendency to load slowly until a particular advert has finished and will then load very quickly.

If you watch the lower left hand corner of firefox when it's loading a page it will go something like
"finding xp.tweaks"
"waiting for xptweaks"
"loading xptweaks"
And if the site has third party adverts it will also go through the process for them, which can mean the site itself is working fast, but the adverts are slowing the page down dramatically.

Well I seem to have cracked it - I downloaded Adblock Plus for Firefox and it seems to have solved the problem of the pages hanging.
