Multiple people joining a Facebook group

Facebook changed the rules some time ago to allow anyone to join a public group without the need to be approved. This doesn't normally cause an issue but I noticed that 8hrs ago 27 people joined the group that I 'admin'.
Being curious I had a look at a few profiles and whilst they appeared to live in various locations they all had one interest in common, which is not sewing, the interest of our group. If the 'Invite' button is used to invite multiple people, do they then have to accept, which would be over a period of time I guess, or are they all added straight away?
I am just interested to know how this has happened and if there is more to this than meets the eye? Should I be concerned. Comments from Facebook experts would be gratefully received. Cheers

You should be able to change this:But generally if you don't want every Tom, Richard and Harry wandering into your group, don't make it public in the first place.
