New motorcycle faulty, transport back to dealer

Hi, I bought a brand new motorcycle a couple of months ago. Over the weekend a bolt sheared off while riding and the exhaust is hanging off, this should be a fairly simple fix but not something I have the tools or replacement parts to do myself. I don't have means to transport it back to the dealership so I have requested that the dealer collect it, repair it and return it. They are refusing to do so unless they happen to be having another bike delivered in my area. I'm only about 45 minutes drive from the shop. What are my rights here, should they be providing/paying for the transport or is it reasonable for them to request that I pay for the bike to be transported to them?

They are obligated to collect it from where you got it. So if you got it delivered initially they should be collecting it but if you bought it from a forecourt then it's on you.

Can you do anything to make it rideable? Can you pay them the courier costs or arrange transport yourself?

Them picking it up if they are in the area isn't entirely unreasonable, but there's no way of knowing how long it'd take.

It sounds like I'm going to be out of pocket another couple of hundred pounds then as I collected the bike from them. It seems ridiculous that I'm liable for this given that it's a brand new bike.
I could leave it for them to pick it up when they can but then my daughter (who I bought the bike for) is without transport which will make it difficult for her to get to work.

The other option is breakdown cover - did they provide any and could you claim it as a breakdown and get it recovered to the garage?

But yeah, most outcomes suck. Your cheapest option is seeing if you have a friend with a trailer, but if it's a brand new bike you maybe want to look after it a bit better.

But it's not a brand new bike any more - it's been used and the cause of the bolt shearing will determine whether it's a warranty issue or whether an external factor has caused it to shear.

If you're confident it's a simple job then a quick ask on a local FB group is likely to find someone who can help for a lot less then the costs your thinking

Alternatively as @Herzlos suggests then breakdown cover might be the way forward

Sharing the bike and a pic of where the bolt is might help with other suggestions (i.e. if it's a bolt into the cylinder head it's a bigger issue than a simple exhaust hanger at the back)

Brand new bike - is there not a Franchised Dealer nearer?

The bolt is in the cylinder head and has sheared off inside, sure if it was just a bolt attaching it to the frame or similar then I'd fix it myself. The bike has done less than 200 miles, surely you're not suggesting that I should be paying somebody to fix it. I'm not sure how you can determine the cause of the breakage, the bike hasn't been damaged or hit anything, it broke off while she was riding home.

Surely it is a WARRANTY repair  so no I am not suggesting you DIY - You should be able to take the bike to any franchised dealer for a warranty repair. You can with Ford, Vauxhall etc.
  • Whats the make/model of the bike? I take it is an exhaust stud thats snapped by your description?
    Its never easy.

Without knowing what the bike is it's a strong assumption ;) - but yes, for any of the mainstream brands you'd expect it
