Is it right that when applying for deferment for a pre 1998 student loan that child benefit is taken into account as earnings? This is paid to me as the mother but is pushing my earnings over the threshold. I would appreciate thoughts on this?

Yes, many benefits count as income in regard to mortgage style student loans. UC, Tax Credits, child benefit, carers allowance to name but a few. The only benefits that don't count as income are disability related benefits.
Unfortunately they're the terms you agreed to when you took the loans out.

How far off are you from the age related cancellation?
