Italian Marriage Certificate

Remortgaging, adding my wife to the mortgage, the lender's legal company, that has been drip feeding requests for different documents over weeks has now said they need a copy of our marriage certificate.  We got married in Italy.  It does say marriage certificate on it somewhere in English, but the rest is in Italian.

Does anyone know what I am likely to have to do in order to produce something that they can accept?

Thanks,
R

Have you given them a copy of the certificate? They may well accept it.

They may ask for it to be translated and certified (? notarised)

I would send them it and see what they say, rather than fret about it before they've even asked for anything further.

Yes, and I have done....but this has been such a stressful process - I'm beyond fretting....  And to make things worse, there's an 'extract of the register of marriages' that has stuff in English, but has an 'r' missing from my wife's first name.  That's what I've sent.

Then there's a more flowery ceremonial document with witness signatures on it.  That's all in Italian and has her name spelt correctly.

You'd think that obvious proof from an EU country (when we were still a member) would do the job...but who knows.

Then I've found this on the gov.uk website.....https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/overseas-marriage-certificate the form asks for father's forenames and surnames.  That's an English document.....a bit sexist?  Plus my wife never had a father in her life....an unofficial step father yes.....I hope we don't have to start filling in those forms!

English marriage have always until recently had only the father's name, people either left it blank or simply made up a name if they didn't know who the father was

My daughter married her Italian fiance in Italy. They don't issue original marriage certificates in the same way that we do over here - the original is at the Town Hall in the area where they were married. This did cause her some problems with banks etc. over here.
She had an old passport in her maiden name and a new one in her married name and this seemed to work eventually. However you won't be able to get an original certificate as that just doesn't exist in Italy.

Quick update, luckily the marriage certificate was accepted.  The legal firm is a bit of a 'sausage machine' mainly manned by employees with no legal qualifications...so everything is a bit unpredictable...
