  • Really good experience with them (although we were insured in 2019/2020), so not very recently. Excellent on the phone when we made a claim and paid the vets directly - definitely recommend. They don't do pre-existing conditions though, so we are no longer insured with them.
  • Took out Tesco Pet insurance for our two dogs when we got a new puppy two years ago.  Our other dog was 4 at the time and had previously been insured elsewhere.  The the quote for two dogs was competitive and cheaper than using our previous provider.  Just had renewal details through and the insurance for our older dog, now 6 years old has doubled!!  From £31 a month to over £60 a month!  I am shocked so I am not looking elsewhere.
  • Ooops - comment above should have said - so I am now looking elsewhere!
  • We took out Tesco Pet Insurance for our two kittens 2 years ago. The price was competitive at £300. The next year it rose to £395 and this year we were quoted £600 to renew. The cats are two and a bit years old with no illnesses or claims.

We went online to look at alternatives and found Tesco were still quoting £300 for our cats.

We have gone elsewhere and will be looking to see if the present insurance goes up drastically on renewal.

I’d be interested to know how many others have experienced this.
  • Hi, I am with Tesco this last year. My dog had a seizure and some blood tests this year, I claimed through the insurance.  Had the renewal through and its gone from 200 per year to 500 per year!  Obviously if I move, I now have a dog with a pre existing condition - so now I'm opening a can of worms in terms of what do I do next! Any advice?

    You have limited choices.

    Pay the increased premium

there are policies that will cover some pre existing conditions if they do not recur and there is no further treatment for a specific time e.g. 2 years

Switch to another policy which will not cover pre existing conditions

Self insure by putting a sum away in a separate account. to cover any claims

You could combine another policy with self insuring for any seizure claims.

Too late now but had you insured with Petplan or Agria your premium would have been more that Tesco  but you would not have had an increase because of the claim. You would have had an increase due to increased running costs only.

    Pet insurance is a minefield.
