Hi all. Non techie here! I have a Dell Vostro 3268 desktop which only has 4GM of RAM and is now running very slowly. There is another slot to add RAM but I'm not sure what I need to buy. The one in the slot says 1Rx16   PC4  2400T. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I've used this site (succesfully). Competitive and great service when I upgraded RAM a year or so ago.  The online chat was good too.

I'm new so cant post the link but Google crucial RAM upgrade.

You could use the below to check what RAM to use, you can upgrade to 8GB or 16GB total on that model.

    https://uk.crucial.com/upgrades

That being said you might find that the issue is also the rest of the components, having being shipped with only 4GB that would indicate that by today's standards the the machine could be very underpowered. What are the rest of the specs, they seem to have come with a bunch of processors in the i3 and i5 4th, 5th and 6th generation, together with hard drives rather than SSDs etc. It may be time to upgrade the whole machine.

Another vote for Crucial here, used them a few times over the years and the memory has always worked first time and never had any fail.

Just put " 4gb 1Rx16   PC4  2400T" into eBay and buy another identical 4gb stick for around £7.

Make sure you get the long stick for a desktop, not the short one for a laptop.

Don't spend more than a few pounds, as it will be dead money, you won't use it in a more modern replacement machine.

What you can spend money on is a new SSD to replace the existing hard drive. That will speed it up and you can transfer it to any new machine.

It may even be the old hard drive starting to fail that is causing the slowdown, no-one ever believes me, but I've had a couple of machines pretty much grind to a halt because a hdd was starting to fail.

I find Crucial to be expensive, I usuallly get RAM from here: https://www.mrmemory.co.uk/memory-ram-products/range/
I'd also say change the drive to an SSD before spending on RAM though.
Both my current laptops only have 4GB RAM in each, and both work acceptably as far as speed goes with Win10 22H2.
The older one (a 10 year old Toshiba Tecra M9) was running pretty slow even after I'd upgraded it to the max 4GB RAM that it will take, but then swaping the drive to a SSD made a vast difference. It was the old, slow, drive that was slowing everything down.

Sorry, maybe I wasn't very clear.

I suggest spending £7 on another 4GB of RAM now certainly, it will have an effect on speed and how well windows runs.

Then I'd look at replacing the HDD with an SSD, the Vostro probably came with a 1TB HDD, a 1TB Samsung SSD is about £70 and comes with a download of software to clone your existing drive.

    (Don't buy crucial MX SSDs)

    Can I ask why ?

There is a problem with the remaining lifetime reducing very rapidly when using windows 10.

I have several, and I stopped using them as system drives, I've left the ones in my laptops as they get little use, but the PC is on 24/7

One is down to 64% life remaining after only 3304 hours (wear levelling count 545)
another is down to 78% after 2965 hours (WLC 326)

By contrast, the replacement samsung still shows 99% after 3361 hours (WLC 17)

Research on t'interweb concluded it was something to do with the high wear levelling counts indicating they are performing unnecessary writes, but no-one knew what triggers it.

Frightening to watch the remaining life count down more than 1% a week!
