For Scottot

Hi there

Didn't want to hijack the other thread.

Why do you think that there is a 90% chance of IVF failing hun?

My background - 1 fallopian tube removed (due to ectopic pregnancy, polycystic ovaries, endometriosis)

Had a cycle of IVF which was successful - was 39 when I conceived and 40 when I had my son.

If you'd prefer you could always pm me but it seems that there are a number of MSE members who have had fertility treatment and their input might be helpful to you?

    Hi Petal,

Typed a long and tearful reply and managed to lose it all (probably a plus!). Briefly unexplained fertility (mild endometriosis) and recurrent miscarriages meant I took off another 5% from the 85% chance that IVF won't work. It's hard, I'm the practical one (OH would give me everything if he could!) - and I don't want to make it harder for him putting us both through this when, as my well-meaning mother puts it, it's just not meant to be (of course, this is the women who suggested I retile the kitchen 30 seconds after I told her we'd lost our second pregnancy - huge issues there!)

What's got me wobbling a bit at the moment - we were referred for IVF in July - went to information evening and adrogny appointment - 4 days before initial consultation got a letter saying that although the consultant told us we were eligible for NHS funding, we're not. A fortnight of writing letters and today we visited the GP to arrange an appeal - he said consultants like you to appeal to create test cases - but Berkshire's only let 2 go through in 10 years.

So if we decide to keep fighting, looks like self-funded is our only hope - but maybe I should just give up - it all feels just too raw and painful!

If I had a £ for every time someone said "it's just not meant to be" Take no notice of people who say stuff like that.....utter rubbish!

I don't know your financial situation but I know that at the hospital where we were treated they offered 0% finance. Also, Halifax are offering 15 months 0% free on purchases at present.

Could this be an option for you?

  • OK, at my clinic the best case scenario was about a 1 in 3 chance the IVF would work, which went down a bit with age.
I have one blocked fallopian tube, PCOS, endometriosis - oh and a fibroid just for good measure...:p
As I said on the other thread we took some money out of the equity of the house; our reasoning being that plenty of people do it for buying a car or holiday, we thought our reasons would be much more life enhancing.

Depending on where you live, the costs may not be horrendous. Current prices in this area are £2600 + between £600 and £1300 for the drugs. Our clinic accepted credit cards, so if you got a low/nil interest one...?

Sorry, just re-read your thread, so you're obviously in Berkshire. I am not sure directing your energies at trying to appeal for funding is the best use of your emotional reserves. Do try by all means, but don't do it to the exclusion of seeking out other ways of doing it privately.

Is there any way of getting together enough money for one cycle? Having said that our consultant told us to budget for 3 attempts, and if that hadn't worked to take some time to consider if we wanted to do it again.

Good luck and take time to grieve about the miscarriages.

    Hiya all!

Quick update - after sending out press releases in a fury before Christmas, it looks like people are listening - we're going to be in the Reading Evening Post this week (photographer coming tonight - eeek!) The paper rang our PCT and they've said they'd 'strongly consider' our case if we appealed - could be just flimflam but encouraging. So we saw our GP to start an appeal on 21st Dec and now we just wait and see!
  • Fingers very firmly crossed! :D

Hurrah! After kicking up a huge fuss (front page of local paper, radio and TV!) we've just heard that our appeal has been successful! We're getting one round of NHS-funded IVF - fingers crossed! I know it's a battle won, not the whole war - but at least it feels like we're in the running again!

Thanks to everyone for all their support!
  • Woohoo!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do hope it's successful - myself and a colleague both have little boys after our first ivf.
