Rear discs need replacing or not

Had my MOT in March (trusted local indy) and the report had an advisory about rear discs being corroded, but otherwise ok. Just had it in for annual (intermediate) service at the Peugeot dealership I bought it from that has done servicing for last 3 years. Car is a 2018 Peugeot 2008 petrol which I've owned for 3 and a half years. On the car health check document it says the following:-

"NSR, OSR disc heavily corroded/scored, requires new discs, pads ok, next pad change replace disks"

They weren't pushing for me to get them to do the work, plus a couple of other bits they picked up. This note seems a bit contradictory as I've no idea when my next pad change will be. Don't want to waste money getting them done now if not needed. I do about 4,000 miles a year at the moment so is it reasonable to leave until the next MOT in March? - the MOT garage I use will do the work at a good price. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to go to the garage with the car so used their collection and return service.

Are the discs heavily corroded and/or scored? If you don't think you're able to judge, can you pop around to your trusted indy and ask them to have a quick look, or will that require getting it onto a ramp and the wheels removing, which they might charge for. Still might be worth a tenner to set your mind at rest.

Main agents often have a different view of when discs and pads require replacement than other garages do.

Seems a reasonable response by the Peugeot dealer. They are saying that the discs are rusty but don't really need replacing just yet as confirmed by the MOT test.

I would leave it until the next MOT in March.

Unfortunately, I can't check myself. I would be happy to assume they are - the garage have always been pretty much on the mark with any issues, and don't seem to be chasing work - didn't charge me when they investigated a rogue warning light about oil pressure last year even though they had to remove the oil sump to check the belts etc. and this report spotted a cut and nail in one of the tyres which I got done today, elsewhere. Just not sure what the comment means.

I could give them a ring but I expect it'd take a lot of faffing around. Usually need 2 weeks notice to get into the local indy, so didn't want to bother them if someone on here had an educated view given I'm sat in front of my computer most of the day today.

Rear brakes don't do much work, for 4,000 miles a year I'd happily leave them if the pads are OK.

I would expect brake pad wear to b e shown as a percentage that way you can judge how much wear since last inspection/replacement - as has been pointed out rear pads/discs do not carry the load that the front does..

Had an MoT done at main dealer. When I collected the car the dealership told me to get the rear brakes changed as they're getting low. 6 months later in same dealership for service. Collected the car and they didn't mention the rear brakes so I asked. Dealership said rear brakes were fine but when I said that 6 months ago in the MoT they said the brakes needed replacing so why didn't they do them, main dealer response was well in the MoT the tester can't see them properly without taking the wheel off which isn't part of the MoT.

So basically the MoT tester guessed.

Expressing the need for replacement in X months means nothing.

How does the guy servicing/testing know HOW YOU drive? That is the reason brake wear should be expressed in percentage terms. If you put in writing that my brakes have six months life left in them and a couple of months later they fail and I am involved in a fatal accident how are you going to defend yourself?

Thanks all for responses. I'll leave it for now unless I get any signs of issues.

I took my 5008 into Peugeot for it 3 year service and they said they would recommend new discs and pads all round.
I had 9-10k on the clock.
It’s going in for its 7 year service in September and still doesn’t need pads or discs.
I don’t trust anyone, Main dealer or local guys.
I would be on my knees and back looking under the car at the discs.
If needed to be replaced I would only use Textar pads and discs. Not the cheapest.
From my research I found discs are Ate or Textar from new.
    Pads are Textar.
Toyota genuine pads are marked Toyota in large letters on the left and made by Textar on the right.

Manufacturers specify Max and Min disc thickness - Ford discs used to be 22 max 18 min.

Before authorising replacing Leasing companies required that you provided the measurments. I had a service manager at one time who was not very happy about that - a real money spinner.

Real problem is that as they are a safety item people are scared to say no. - Just as I have said about brake pad wear it should be shown as a measuement/percentage wear - thiskness of brake pads are published by the manufacturer the same as discs.
