Returned item to seller

Hi, I returned an item I was purchasing via Klarna for £20.99 back in December 2022. However, as it wasn't as good as I thought it would be, I returned the item within days of receiving it. Returns by recorded or signed for wasn't stipulated, I returned it by ordinary post. Then I began getting chased for payment, I told Klarna that I had returned the item, and I sent them the receipt for the postage, they eventually told me it wasn't proof of posting, so the receipt was not accepted (I've since lost the receipt). Now I'm been chased by a debt recovery agency for payment of the £20.99. I spoke to them and advised them of the situation, they told me it would be the actual seller that I should get in touch with, which I immediately did. However, the seller stated that I should have returned the item by tracked postage, and they then told me that it should be Klarna that I get in touch with! Which I had already done. I asked the seller to tell me where it specified return by tracked postage, and as of yet they've not replied. I am constantly being chased by the debt recovery agency by telephone, I don't want to have to pay the £20.99 again for an item I don't have, but I'm worried that this will go against me on my credit report

If you don't have proof of postage and the recipient hasn't received it, and you organised the return yourself, you've little option but to pay it.
It'll be cheaper to pay it now than later.

The DCA won`t "chase" £20 for very long, and neither will Klarna.
The upshot is you won`t be able to use Klarna again, unless you can either convince them your telling the truth, or pay the money (again).
This won`t appear on your credit report, as, I`m guessing it was a "pay in 30 days" transaction, only there pay in 3/6 months products may appear on your credit file.
The debt collector doesn't own the debt, so can`t do anything but write to you, and Klarna won`t waste much time over a £20 quid transaction.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. "I asked the seller to tell me where it specified return by tracked postage, and as of yet they've not replied." - I'm not suprised, I don't think this is the sellers responsibility. Given that the item was not faulty and you agreed to return the item (at your expense) to the seller for a refund, I don't think it is reasonable to argue about the postage service you chose to use. I'm sure you likewise would not have been impressed if the seller recommended you use an expensive premium service at your cost. It's really nothing to do with them how you choose to return it, they just expect to receive it.
Try and look at it this way - you bought this item, a week goes by but it still hasn't turned up, so you contact the seller and their response is "well I posted it so not my fault you apparently haven't received it." - how would you respond? What if you then found out they posted it on a cheap untracked service, and when challenged ask you to tell them where you specified delivery should have been by a tracked service?
But all of this is meaningless because, as sourcrates says, the person who's out of pocket at the moment is Klarna, and it's unlikely they'll waste their time taking you to court over £21. (That said, for a small amount like £21, I'd personally just pay it so I don't have to deal with the stress of random letters or potentially random people coming through the door - and chalk it up as a lesson. I personally wouldn't consider returning anything on an untracked/uncompensated service).Know what you don't0
