How do I sell shares?

Mother has 250 Alliance & Leicester shares which were given to her for some technical reason by A+L a few years ago. Having shown her a chart of their performance against various funds over that time she is convinced to sell.
How do we do this? I know there are various on-line dealers - but don't they work in electronic shares - these are real paper things - I suppose we'd have to post them somewhere?
I know this sounds really stupid but I've no idea where to start - contact a stockbroker, perhaps? Which one? - Any suggestions?

Try Comdirect. Send your certificates to them (after you've spoken to them) recorded delivery. They will transfer them into a system called Crest (Electronic version of a filing system). Then you either log on and sell them, or do it over the phone. Cost is £12.50. No additional costs are incurred for the amount you have.0

You remembered to include the dividends in the total return calculation, right?
Edit: I don't mean that she should keep the shares; just that she needs to get a real picture of her actual return.

sneeky, you need to be aware that following the above advice you will have a share dealing account with Comdirect. If you ever wished to close the account you are likely to incur admin charges. Having said this I was unable to find the charge for closing the account on the Comdirect website, so you may wish to verify any additional charges for closing the account, post sale.
