Young Driver - Pay As You Go Insurance options

Hi there,

Not sure if this is exactly the right forum, but I'm having difficulty with the Forum search function as I don't seem to be able to find anything relevant for this topic.

Anyway, my Son as just passed his driving test, and looking to get insured on my car (I'm his Dad).

I have considered putting him as a named driver on my insurance, but 1) I don't want my NCD affected if he claims, and 2) I'd like him to start building up his own NCD.

I've done a trawl of compare sites for insurance, and they're all coming out at about 1300-1500 range for an annual policy for him. I guess this is about normal nowadays for a young driver (with a black box).

However, he will not be using the car that often, as he goes off to Uni in September.
I'm therefore considering a PAY AS YOU GO policy, or PAY BY THE MILE policy for him.

The only place I can find that does such a policy is Marmalade, but I find the concept being discussed on several internet sites, so I'm sure that there are more companies that offer such a policy for a young driver. For example, Go Compare talk about such policies and offer a 'Get Quote' for such. However when I do this, all it gives me at the end are Annual policy quotes, not PAYG.

So my question is; which companies offer competitive quotes for PAY AS YOU GO/PER MILE car insurance policies for young drivers please?
Any recommendations?

Thank you.

From experience age will lower the quotes faster than any NCB in the early years.

Use Veygo or similar car-sharing insurance if he needs to borrow your car temporarily.
  • Hi,

Considering he will be back home intermittently throughout the year, what I'm really after is a pay per mile policy which covers the whole year. I wouldn't want to have to keep taking out new cover every time he comes back.

I can't find anywhere other than Marmalade, that offer such as service.
  • Hi, I have received a quote for my son to drive my car under similar circumstances to yourself. I just wondered if you took out the insurance with Marmalade and if so, what your experience has been like so far?
  • I’m with Bymiles, it charges 2 fees.
The first fee is for annual cover, fully comp, protected bonus, legal cover etc.
    Paid upfront.
The second fee is the per mile charge, billed each month like a mobile contract.
    Not sure about marmalade.
