The instructions do NOT say that the old one must be returned. What they actually say is:
"Not sure what to do with your old licence? - Cut in half and then send it to DVLA ... "
So if you are sure, as I was, you can bin it.Let's Be Careful Out There0 -
I've kept my old licences purely from sentiment. They're like old friends. When I needed a photo licence, I kept the old fold up paper licence. I've been driving for so long, I even have my provisional licence in a little red book where they stuck a new page on the front when I passed my test.
I expect the DVLA police will be around soon to arrest me. 🤔1 -

I kept my old licence, just as a spare ID if the address is not important.I am a bit of a hoarder tho, I have saved plastics cards going back over 10 years, my Liberal Democrat membership card, my AA card, numerous broadband password cards0

Just renewed my licence. While, as above, the letter is a bit ambiguous about whether you *have* to send your old one back in, the email is not:
"When you get your new licence
You must cut your old licence in half and send to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AB".
Of course, doesn't mean that anyone necessarily checks whether you have, but the DVLA is pretty clear that you should. I'll spend a stamp, but agree it seems a rather odd rule.

My recent over 70 Driving Licence renewal had to be done by completing a form, attaching a passport type picture and submitting by post. This was because it wasn't possible to apply online, no Passport. My expiring Licence had to be enclosed with the form. Otherwise no can do.Previously an online renewal was possible without having a Passport and there was no appreciable change to the picture they had. I had never returned the old Licence and there wasn't an issue.0

NOT CORRECT. My over 70 renew app. - After on line application DVLA sends envelope for cut licence card with letter to sign & date to be received within 21 days (now 17 left) or DVLA cancel! SO, that is presumably the same if lost too. It is 16/12/24 today....Xmas post. Will cost new application + £20! Up to £1000 fine for not returning.0
