I've overpaid to my Santander 123 card prior to holidays with no problem. They only got iffy when we mistakenly overpaid after the holiday and took a while to clear the balance down. Some cards will automatically bounce the excess back to the account where the payment originated, sometimes also charging a "money transfer" fee. Santander did charge me one for a small credit balance left but this was when I rang them to tidy up the situation and they said the fee would be charged (system had to do it) but would automatically be refunded which was fine.
Other times I've rung the card company as others have reported and said I was about to make a large purchase and could the limit be upped. Once it was to buy a car which meant a £10k boost to the limit that remained in place for several years after.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards.
