Monzo declined transaction

Bought something on a TUI flight last week using Monzo and now I'm getting notifications that it has been declined as it wasn't done with chip and pin.  The flight attendant took my card, tapped it on the reader and handed me the receipt.

There's no way of authorising the payment and I've left the money in the account in case TUI some how works out I still owe them. I've bought in-flight stuff quite a few times without issues so a bit baffled why this hasn't gone through.

Some flights have declined Monzo in the past but not this particular flight

I can't imagine my case is unique?

  • I had a similar issue using a credit card on a TUI flight a few years back - when we returned home I contacted TUI and honoured the transaction using another payment method.
I was uncomfortable with the thought that the air stewardess might be help responsible for the loss and possibly have it deducted from wages.
Not sure if that's how it would have panned out - maybe I'm just too honest !!!

    Who is saying it's declined?

Is there a debit on your Monzo account?

It's the Monzo app that's pinging out the notification every few days.
  • Hay, this is happening to me at the moment, did you find an answer/resolution?

Try using the ping function @RavingMad so they get an alert

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

    TUI will know the details.

In the case of a connection failure, it is possible for a retailer to set a floor limit on their card payments. Any sums below this limit will show as approved in the case that the card machine cannot connect - the retailer (not the bank) would take the hit on this. Any sums above the floor limit would be declined in the case of a failed connection.

I suspect that there was a connection blip for whatever reason when you attempted payment. The card machine would correctly allow any contactless payment through if below the configured floor limit.

ALL contactless go for authorisation. Floor limits do not apply. This is a security measure against stolen cards.
