Please help! Current energy balance nearly £2k in debt!
Options
Good afternoon,
So I have been paying my energy direct debit, as agreed with octopus, no issues and nothing from them saying I need to pay more. I have just received a statement saying I am almost £2k in debt!! I emailed them to question it and they have said they will help me set up a payment plan. On top of what I am already paying?? There is no way I can afford more outgoings on top of what I already pay.
What can I do??
Thank you in advance,
Amanda

Check the meter number on the bill is the same as on your meter.
Check the readings on the meter and on the bill match.

Has Octopus recently been able to read your meter - either remotely or by a meter reader.?
Can you post a copy of your bill - blanking out names / addresses to include the costs and the meter readings. Can you go back in time until you find a bill with actual meter readings on it.
Sounds like Octopus have just been able to get a meter reading - by meter reader or remotely.
Are your payments shown on the statement ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
If you can give us a bit more info, we can help understand how this situation arose.
- On your most recent bill, what were the meter readings? Are they Actual or Estimated?
- When was your previous bill? What were the meter reading(s) on it and were they Actual or Estimated? Was your account in credit or debit at that time, and by how much?
- How much have you been paying in your monthly DD?

It isn't easy to get into that position with Octopus, except by not providing meter readings as they really don't like using estimated readings, and when you supply a meter reading it causes a bill to be produced...So it would be good to see what that most recent bill says, and the previous bill details would help as well...0

It's virtually impossible to get into that position: if you don’t send them readings, Octopus will send you an estimated bill every three months.
