Toilet question

Options
Today my toilet after being flushed is not filling high enough. There are popping noises and the water level in the toilet drops really low after the flush so that the U bend has an air gap rather then being sealed fully with water. I chucked some water down to top it up but it has dropped back down again.

An important thing to note is the person that put the original toilet in was an idiot and the outside plumbing has no air vent to let air into the system (ie doesn't comply to building regs). Am I right in thinking that something in the system/weather has caused a change in pressures that is causing a suction pulling the liqued out of my U-bend as a result?

If this is the case is it recommended I get someone to sort my pipes outside or not worry about it?

sounds like there's a pressure differential between the sewage pipe and your bathroom, this would be sorted by having the soil stack vented correctly. I take it there's no leakage you haven't spotted in the U bend pipework.
  • no, there are no leaks and it's only just started doing it today.

  • Hi

Is your toilet ground floor or first floor?

First thing to check is the manhole outside .Lift the lid and what do you see?
Lift any manhole covers you can find (if you have more than one)

  • Andy: Are you saying that your property doesn't have a 4 inch pipe running outside, up and over your gutter or up through the roof internally? I remember you mentioning that you have a bungalow.

  • Hi
Ground floor toilets run straight to drain, but there is still a vent from the drain to above roof level to vent the drains, in andrew-b's case it's next door. Ours and a lot of other bungalows have their own individual vent.It stops gas build ups and prevents the water trap being drawn out of the wc. as in the OP's case.
The OP either has a blocked vent and drain or faulty air admittance valve (Durgo type of thing ) Something has happened as the wc formerly worked ok, so look in the manhole.
    Milk and one sugar please.;)

  • pulled up the manhole cover and the drain is full od stuf I didn't want to see floating...guess it's call in a drain unblocker time? I pulled up another of the 3 manhole covers in my garden and it was clear so assume thats what it should look like!

Thanks everyone for the help :)

  • although if anyone in Bristol could recommend a company that would be handy as I am only aware of Dyno-rod and drain doctor.

Try running a hose- pipe at low pressure in to your manhole, it may just clear it.
  • Ok finally know whats happened...the house 3 doors down has got blocked up and it's backed up the system at least as far as my house. Spoke to my neighbour (who has had this problem several times before) and have agreed to lend him the drain rods I bought today so hopefully will all be cleared tomorrow.
