Home Responsibility Protection

Options
I am trying to check if the HRP credits I have been given are correct. Rang HMRC and was told I need to contact DWP.  Rang them and was told it’s HMRC. Have been tweeting HMRC as couldn’t face waiting on phone again.  They have just told me I need to contact National Insurance Helpline which having googled it is actually the HMRC phone line.  No one seems to know what they are doing.  Any advice.

  • HRP is administered by HMRC and I believe it is the National Insurance part of which is responsible for it.

DWP's only involvement is that HRP could have a subsequent knock on effect on the amount of State Pension will ultimately be paying you.

Yes I believe HMRC is responsible but apparently they don’t see it this way.  If the credits are wrong it is affecting me pension.

Now they’ve tweeted me that when I call hmrc again I have to tell them to look in their handbook. What a farce.

I looked on my government gateway account and for the years when I was at home with children under 16 there were credits but they were all different some 6 weeks some 26 weeks but none for the whole year.  It just seems strange and I just wanted an explanation.

I think what @sammyjammy was referring to was that, even if you filled those part missing years by claiming HRP, it may not actually increase your state pension.

It all depends upon exactly what your state pension forecast says, particularly how many pre 2016 years you already have.

I appreciate it is not the question you asked but chasing this up without being absolutely sure it makes a difference first would be waste.

I took over the full time care of my now husbands two small children in 1985 he was claiming child benefit and transferred it to my name in 1988 the three years 1985-1988 I had no nic credits.  About 3 years ago to bring my NIC years up to date we made a lump sum payment of around 11K,  I reached retirement age yesterday and am eligible for the full rate of pension, if I can successfully claim for a transfer of the 3 missing years for child rearing can I get a refund of 3 years worth of the lump sum to bring my contributions up to the required level of 35 years which I paid 3 years ago?
