YOUNG DRIVER INSURANCE DILEMMA

Options
My daughter passed her test 12/06/23 and I want to insure her on my car with her own policy so that her NCD can start ASAP.  I already have 33 years driving experience and am with the RAC at present.  I want to be able to add myself as a named driver on her new policy to help bring her costs down and would probably go down the black box route.  I've had a quote from Marmalade and plenty of others too.  Admiral little box seemed like a good option, however on speaking to an insurance company today, the ones that take your details on line and then call you with what they can offer, the question of dual insurance got brought up. I wanted to still pay my RAC insurance but also be on my daughters new policy with whomever we end up with.  She doesn't want nor need a car of her own right now and would be driving mine at weekends and the occasional evening. It sounds like I would be doing something illegal if I retain my own RAC insurance but also add myself as a name driver on my daughters policy.  If I tried to simply add her to my existing RAC insurance she wouldn't build up any NCD, same applies if I went on her insurance but she was policy holder name she would build up NCD and mine would stop.  I just want to get her driving my car ASAP as she learnt in an instructors car and hasn't driven mine at all yet and don't want to loose the momentum for her.  She is worried about driving mine a bit due to different bite etc, which is normal of course.  Can any one offer me any help or suggestion?.  I've found quotes for around £1,200 up to around £1,500 for a new policy for my daughter with me as named driver using comparison sites etc.  Just finding it hard to find where I legally stand with regards to "dual insurance"? I obviously need to do the correct thing but seem to be going round in circles trying to find out where I stand.  Looking forward to some quick replies.  Thanks in advance :)

I think insurance companies would take a dim view of you being a named driver, if you're in fact the main driver.

To be clear... you want to have 2 policies against the same vehicle?
I don't think that's allowed. In the event of an accident, which policy's in force...?

    I agree, it's not logical.

My main problem now is how we both can achieve NCD as 2 separate drivers of the same car?

Ok, so if I cancel my main insurance with RAC and go as a named driver on my daughters policy to allow her to start building up her NCD, would my NCD that I have accumulated be safe for in the future when I want my own policy again? Could they be banked some how? Why is this such a minefield.  I just want my daughter to drive my car along with me but for us both to be insured and be achieving NCD if possible.  I have been told Marmalade and possibly Ticker could be the answer so am going to speak with them today, wish me luck!

Why not talk with an Insurance Broker rather than the ;pick and mix route of comparison sites.

Two policies on one cae is used by learner drivers when learning on the family car so obviously it is not umknown and a broker may actually be able to come up with a solution. Comparison sites are not non-standard friendly and that is what you are looking for.

So you're back to being a named driver, when in fact you're the main driver.

Were it that simple, people wouldn't moan about the cost of insurance for new/young drivers. They'd just insure the vehicle as you suggest...

In my experience insurance companies no longer use NCB in the way they used to, i recently bought a second car and quotes were simply based on my age , experience and how long since i had last had an accident/claimed (now that everything is computer based its much easier for insurance companies to check this).  The car is yours , you are the main driver- the policy needs to be in your name with her as an added user.  When she eventually gets her own car she will benefit from the years she has had driving yours and the fact that she is older. This will bring her quotes down at that time. I believe it is illegal to insure anything twice for obvious reasons.

When I renewed my insurance recently, one of the NCD questions was how the NCD was earned.
    Driving on own policy.
    Driving as a named driver.
    Driving a company vehicle.
    etc.

I guess the proportion of those NCD years that are taken into consideration will vary between insurers.

It's not, as Grey_Critic has pointed out above.

But it would cause a lot of hassle in the event of a claim.
