Not allowed
It would be a contrived tenancy

It would be a contrived tenancyI didn't read it as asking if the 20 year old can claim for help with the rent. They can charge them rent and it won't affect the mothers UC.pope said:Hi I want to ask this question for a friend.

Then he can't be a lodger. Charging them rent will have no impact on their UC claim. However, if the mother claims for help with the rent there maybe a non dependant deduction for the mother's UC once the 20 year old reaches 21, unless they are exempt. No the parent will not be claiming help for rent as own house.poppy12345 said:pope said:

Then there's nothing to worry about. I'm not sure how they can take them in as a lodger when they are already living there.

As the child has always lived there with his parent and on parents UC claim but has now started to claim UC his own claim. And parent wants to charge rent.poppy12345 said:Then there's nothing to worry about. I'm not sure how they can take them in as a lodger when they are already living there.

So now HillStreetBlues' initial comment IS relevant, child will not get any rent help for living with their parent. Parent can charge if they want - most people just call it housekeeping or board or something along those lines - but the child will get no extra financial help for it.pope said:

It would have saved time had you made that clear in your first question...
