I’m awaiting my new car and will have to swap my plates over, so I’ll be putting my plate on retention, so the car I’m px,ing, will have the original plates on, any idea how long the new v5 will take to come ?, I realise this is a piece of string question, but it says allow 4-6 weeks, I don’t want any hold ups when I eventually get my new car, of course everything has happened while I’m away this week so I can’t do the transfer until I get back at the weekend..

When I sold mine in March I put the plate on retention online and the new v5c with the original reg was with me 3 days later.

Similar for the car that replaced it, got the v5c in a few days, used that to put the plate back on it and then the final updated v5c was with me 4 days after transferring the plate to the new car.

Thanks , that’s hopeful, I don’t want the dealer to say I can’t complete the sale until they have the v5 for my px…

so long as you do it online, it’s usually very quick. Post adds 7-10 days in my experience. Usually back within the week

Dealer will most likely want the v5c with the correct registration before they take it as a part exchange. Mine was happy provided I showed them proof I had put the plate back on retention and would send them the new v5c as soon as I had it by recorded delivery. They said the keep the trade in for a week or so before sending it on to auction etc in case of any issues anyway so it wasn't going to hold up anything their side.

The pain was having to inform the insurer it had changed plate and then again a few days later the car changed, and then a few days after that the plate changed again. Managed to do it so that it was all under on notification, so one administration fee. Just meant scheduling the final plate change to a week after purchase to give the v5c to arrive.

With a bit of luck I might be able to get the dealer to register it with my plate, I’m back next week so might pop in and explain things and see what they say, typical though, you go away with no info on when things are moving regarding the new car, then get notifications that it’s been built, left the factory, atm, it’s sitting at zeebrugge…
