Best food for a dog on a diet

My dog is probably going to need an operation but to give him the best chance he needs to lose quite a lot of weight. The vet has suggested getting him a diet food which is low in calories but high in vitamins and fibre.

I use Burns weight control chicken and oats with my dog and she lost weight on it. She seemed happy with the amount she was allowed daily but have increased it slightly now she reached her target weight.0

You don't say whether you feed wet or dry food.
Chappie tinned food is pretty low in fat - I've had dogs do very well on it in the past.
If your dog will eat veggies then I've had success in the past with cutting down some of the actual dog food in every meal and adding in some cooked carrots, broccoli, peas etc to bulk it out. So the dog feels full but certainly less fat and calories than before. You don't want to substitute more than about 20% of each meal with veg though.0 -

I would be suggesting a slight reduction in food & adding fresh veg to bulk it out. It depends what you are feeding at the moment. The chances are you may be feeding as recommended by the manufacturers, which may well be too much.
My dogs are the ideal weight: sadly that can't be said about the owner!!!Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

Thank you all for the replies. Im feeding less than the manufacturers recommendation but he seems to be permanently hungry so will try to bulk out with some veg first.1

try different combinations of veg but not potatoes! They are perfect for putting the weight on.
You might try a raw carrot as a crunchy snackBeing polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!
