PC to TV

I want to connect my brothers PC to his TV as he lives in a smallish apartment in the city. I thought it would be a much simpler thing to do than it really is. When I went to look at his PC the other day he has no S-Video connection. So if it was to be made possible it would have to be through the VGA connection on the back of the tower that his monitor connects to. I also wanted to connect it to his TV with a scart as it’s an oldish TV (its not that old it does have build in digital TV) but it does have an S-Video connection on the TV. Can anyone please help me make this possible?

  • You have 2 options.

    1) If he has a new tv with a VGA input, buy a long VGA cable.

    2) If not, you need to buy a new graphics card (not too expensive for tv out) which has S-Video

Unless anyone has any other ways that's all I could suggest :)

Get a new Sony all-in-one and just plug it in to the TV socket. Maybe expensive solution but it worked for me! Sold on my old DELL to offset some of the cost.

I was hoping that I would be able to connect to the VGA on the PC tower then to the S-Video on the TV then connect the sound with Jack cables. That’s if this is possible. Does anyone know?
  • Those types of converters aren't cheap:

You'd be better of buying a graphics card.

yup - I'd go with buying a new grapics card too, you'll only need a basic one as long as it has s-video out on it & it should come with the drivers\software to let you clone the screen to the tv or stretch the desktop over the 2 screens.

It's how I used to connect my last tower to my TV.

    worto.

Thank all. I still have another option. I have another PC at home that I dont use. I will have a look at that to see if that has a S-Video. Hopefully it will. Am I right in saying that I will be able to connect it straight to the TV by a S-Video to S-Video cable or can I do it with an S-Video to Scart as I have seen these for sale. Can they be used on a PC. Failing all this I will go and buy a graphics card.
  • You'd be better of using S-Video direct. Why pay more for an S-Video to Scart adapter?

  • I have a fairly top end graphics card and connect it to my tv with an s-video cable, I have to say the results are mixed, the normal computer display looks rubbish and will not fit the screen correctly, plus it's blurred, but if I display media centre or media player to watch a film the picture is good, I'd hoped for a lot better, I guess these new lcd tv's are a lot better than my crts' resolution.

  • That's because of the hz that the tv can display and the difference between a PC monitor and a CRT TV, and also what an S-Video transfers.

S-video cables are made for video out really.. so watching media files and video's on your tv. If you want to use your tv as a monitor you need a DVI VGA cable to an LCD TV that supports it.
