Age gap relationship & teachers pension

My husband is still with me, and it seems awful to think about this already, but I am trying to work out if I will be able to afford to stay where I am in the event of his passing.
He receives a teachers pension, plus state pension. There is a large age gap between us, so I haven't reached pension age yet. I know I will be due some widows pension from the teachers, but wondering if I will receive that as soon as he dies, or only when I reach retirement age myself?
Thanks.

Ultimately, you need to read the scheme rules for the pension and any AVC they may be bought into.
In most cases widows pensions start immediately however some do reduce the amount payable for "child brides"/large age gaps... have only looked at Teachers AVCs in the past and from memory they didnt have such clauses.1 -
Is this the scheme? looks like there is no age limits for the spouses pension https://www.teacherspensions.co.uk/members/once-retired/death-benefits.aspx1

Also known, in some circles as a "trophy wife clause" if that helps with your research. Such a clause usually reduces the widow's pension by a further 2.5% per year for each year over 10 years of age difference.DullGreyGuy said:however some do reduce the amount payable for "child brides"/large age gaps

your husband can message the TPS directly with this question and they will give him a breakdown of how much of his pension you will receive, and from what date. I did this with them regarding my stepfather when my teacher mum died. I’ve also done it for my own husband as I’m also a retired teacher.0
