Slugs entering home from under floor (?)

  • Update: I've not had more snails yet since putting a small net over the airbrick, that said I think they only came a handful of times so far anyway so who knows if it did anything. fingers crossed. I see no need to kill them and hope they just stay outside, I'm fine with them in the garden.

As you have guessed, there could be damp in the space under the floorboards.  The dampness can be as a result of something simple such as a small leak from a radiator valve.  Such a leak can easily go unnoticed for years, but eventually will cause problems.  Also check for more obvious thing such as leaky gutters and downpipes and also that the ground around the building has not been raised recently so that it is coming close to the damp proof course
No sign of gutters being problematic but that was a good tip to check..! could very well be a small leak from a radiator valve.. I sure hope not but only ripping the floor up would uncover it I imagine.. My wishful thinking is that maybe with enough hard rain even small splatters of rain will come into the airbrick and make it moist for a small period, moist enough for snails to chill around. The humidty in the garden is generally high (70%) around rain times so that air needs to exit the void from under the house I reckon before snails would want to leave.. I'm just making up things to make myself cope rather than wanting to investigate a potential under floor leak :grimace:

Since the OP mentioned airbricks, I assumed that the floor in question was a suspended timber floor with a void underneath.  The OP mentions that the kichen floor is a concrete floor. Is the floor where the slugs are, a solid floor as well?
Yeah the airbrick is 1 meter away from where the slugs come up and the floor is suspended timber with laminate on top. A little further away is the solid, lowered kitchen where the boiler is, the kitchen floor is concrete with laminate on top and I can see the pipes going into the raised floor and towards the radiator.

    Thank you everyone.
