I've lost too much digital stuff over the years so don't want to depend on that for things.  And in any case we don't have a scanner.

But thanks everyone for your answers and ideas.

There is an Adobe scan app thats quite good, that lets you generate pdfs by taking pictures of the documents. The results aren't as good what you get with a flatbed scanner but they are perfectly acceptable.

If you save them to OneDrive, Google Drive, iCloud or whatever it is you use for your normal backups then they should be quite safe.
  • I tend to keep most things 7 to 10 years.

This come to my rescue on a couple of occasions.

When I was renting my house, but had no Tennent, I suffered a major water leak.  It took 3 months to for the repairs to complete and dry.  Because of this, I did not have to pay the “Poll Tax” for the unoccupied/uninhabitable property for that period.

5 years later, when I was living in the property, I had a letter from the council stating I was being taken to court by the council for not paying the “poll tax” for that period.  In addition, the police was going arriving at my house to make sure I attend.

I had original receipts for all the work done and dated for proof.  In addition, my letter to the council about the flood and it was unoccupied/uninhabitable.

Producing these receipts and letters, the council stopped their actions immediately, but refused to apologise stating it was the fault of a different Council department.
