Wasps' nests are the colour of light brown paper and fairly smooth on the outside. Maybe it is just the photograph, but that football size thing is white and has knobbly bits on the outside.

Yes. Two nests, completely different colours. The first is light brown (can be seen at the bottom of the lower pIc).
The other inside is light grey with swirl like patterns on the outside. Have seen this before and it’s probably to do with the source. Old fence panels can go a similar colour and I’ve seen wasps in the past scratching at the surface.

Get plenty of insulation inside there
Ok. Wasn’t planning to. I won’t be able to reach right across as it’s just under 3m wide.
A couple of bags of loose fill insulation. Use a long handle broom to shove it into the far reaches. Fill to the top of the joists, and then unroll a piece or two of loft insulation across the top. That said, if the porch has an exterior grade door through to the house on the inside, the heat loss will not be great.

Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

Wasps don’t usually build where there’s been a previous nest, you can buy false wasps nests to deter them, not sure how successful they are though
