Camera not recognised by laptop

I've been happily using the two and transfering photos etc.
Today it wouldn't register on the laptop.
Went to thingy and devices on the computer but it couldn't find the camera (yes, it was plugged into the same usb socket)
Fiddled, tried switching camera on and off, changing ports and all the usual. Looked at the camera menu and it doesn't seem to have any settings to use.

Ideas welcome.
Camera Nikon Coolpix which links to and old laptop W7.

I have taken photos off by using a (long forgotten) Multi Card Reader with a usb.

Think it may be something I've done. It never gave me a 'safe to eject' but didn't have a problem removing the USB and cord/camera
but this was an occasion when I was trying to delete a photo direct to the camera and it deleted the whole folder not just the one photo.  This has happened before and I obviously didn't learn. Exasperated I removed the camera from the cord/usb to examine it and see it it would still record photos. Left the cord in. When I next come to move photos it won't acknowledge the camera.

Sometimes cameras have a 'mode' to connect t to the USB, direct storage or something else. Perhaps try to find thay setting, set to something else, connect, and if it doesn't work set it back - that might be enough to reset it.

Really bizzarely, but it might be an idea to try a different usb port, whilst it seems bizzarely that did work for me on an older machine. (i think this was ones in the back vs ones on the front on a desktop thou, so slightly different)

Have you tried a different cable and port combination?

Port yes - cable no because this one has a gizmo in it that I'm guessing is some sort of power control.
I just tried to charge the battery and found the docking in the camera was feeble (not happened before) and I had to support the connection with a bottle.
I did try similar last night the docking port in the camera itself but no sucess.
I'll give it another go with the computer later. See if starting really from scratch will help.

Personally I would never download from the camera, always from the memory card via a card reader or a built in memory card port as it is often faster and avoids wear and tear on the camera’s USB port.

A habit I developed with my little camera that had a micro sd. Even my small fingers struggled to get that out and in the reader.
I was trying to delete directly to save my poor old laptops memory - and that's not a good idea either :/

I always download direct from the camera as the supplied software automatically creates seperate folders for each day.  I don't know if there is 3rd party software out there which does the same.
