Many people don't realize but they turn on Bit locker themselves without knowing. It is usually done after the Windows Update where it is covertly asking you something like ''make your computer more secure'' , by clicking yes, Bitlocker comes on. If you don't know it you need your Windows reinstalled and you loose your data but can reuse a computer. If you don't know how you can take it to a local computer store. I had mine fixed few years back by Hex in Edinburgh

Sorry, I've been meaning to post on here but just haven't had time.

I got a newer USB stick and downloaded the cloud recovery thing but it comes up with this error message when I try to boot the new laptop from it - I've tried a few times by removing it and putting it back in but still the same issue:

(10:20:25.08)(startnet) Error, Can't find boot disc

John Lewis still aren't interested. HP are WhatsApp messaging me but at really random times and they keep asking me what the issue is, I've told about 50 times.

At this point, I'm tempted to just chuck the stupid thing in the bin and buy a new one.

When it takes you three weeks to respond on your own thread, it puts into perspective your claim of HP messaging you 'at random times'.
Also your claim of contacting JLP within ten days of buying it and you not knowing that you could simply return a faulty item is rather suspect too.
Personally I think you just leave things/procrastinate until it's too late.
You cannot expect anyone to devote their time to your issue when you just wander off for weeks.
You did the same with your previous thread about the same laptop: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6414309/
In fact I remember replying to your post at the time, within ten days of your purchasing the HP, suggesting that you give it back and to obtain a much better model for less money: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/79742002/#Comment_79742002

You did the same in the thread before that: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6283334/

You just wander off with no conclusion....just buying new laptops at the slightest hint of an issue and then popping up a while later with a new thread about the new laptop.

Get serious. Make clear when you will have the time to deal with the issue properly and finally and someone may devote that time to helping you solve your issue. Reappearing at random times weeks later, is just disrespectful to the people giving their time freely.
So state a clear time when you will be online and be ready to answer any questions and to take steps to solve the issue....or just buy a new laptop again. That's three in less than four years and now you are angling for a 4th :)

    In the meantime....
    1. Plug the AC adapter into the computer.

    2. Press the Power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

    3. Turn on the computer and start pressing Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
    4. When the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics menu displays, click Component Tests.

HP PC Hardware Diagnostic UEFI screen

    5. In the Component Tests menu, click Hard Drive, and then click Quick Test.

    6. Click Run once.

Running the Hard Drive Quick Test

    7. The Hard Drive Quick Test begins. If the computer has more than one hard drive, select the drive you want to test. To test all the hard drives, select Test All Hard Drives.

    8. Report the result here. Hopefully it won't take another three weeks before you get around to responding.

If all ok, reset the PC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVxDcZw2NBc

If resetting the PC does not work without the BitLocker credentials, then you can request assistance here on how to run a clean install, deleting ALL partitions prior to the actual install.

From memory on your HP Pavilion, you have two ways to get it to Boot from the USB installation media; the easiest is plug in the installation media and then restart the machine or turn it off completely. As soon as you have pressed the power button to turn it back on again, press the F12 key repeatedly(though just keeping your finger on it should also suffice). You should be presented with a choice of drives from which to boot the laptop. Hopefully your USB installation media drive is listed there. Choose it and the device should get started on the installation process.
    Then follow these instructions: https://pureinfotech.com/clean-install-windows-11/#windows11_clean_install_usb

the problem you are having is that you have a bit locked hard drive

what you need to do is go to the Microsoft media creation site on another PC and get yourself a USB stick

download the media creation tool and create a boostable windows image onto that stick

take that stick to your laptop and boot from it

once you have setup running, go to 'advanced' and delete all partitions on your hard drive - this will delete them including the bitlocked one

Then you can continue installing Windows

Once finished, you can even then install the recovery image if you wish as your drive will not be bitlocked

Managed to chat to HP today on WhatsApp. Tried to get the bit locker key via my Microsoft account and do the recovery tool via the USB stick again. They've said there is something wrong with the laptop. They gave me a code which I passed onto John Lewis. I need to send the laptop back for a full refund.

Thanks to everyone who helped. I appreciate it. Now to find another laptop to buy. Wish me luck.
