... smart meters' data for TOU tariffs is sent to the centralised DCC database in 1/2 hour totals based on UTC (ie GMT).

This data is then forwarded from the DCC to the particular supplier (in my case Eon - in yours BG)
Just to correct my misunderstanding of the DCC role in the data handling..
    • The energy usage is actually stored on the meter, with a timestamp in UTC time (ie GMT)
    • The meters are polled directly by the energy supplier, (and not held on a database as I'd originally assumed)
    • The DCC's involvement is to manage the Smart Meter infrastructure, so any polling is presumably through them, as their documentation states
The smart meter network uses two layers of encryption, and the most important data passes over our network without us having the ability to see it.
    ....
Smart meters simply record your gas and electricity readings in the same way as your traditional meter. Only your supplier (or third parties when given explicit permission from the consumer) can see how much energy you are using and when

Great info here, I'd like to follow this thread (sorry couldn't find the button do do that!). BG told me that it would always be 12-5 (so BST in summer) but I haven't got my bill yet so will have to wait and see. I've got a SMETS2 British Gas smart meter from 2016 (this was originally SMETS1 but was told it had been upgraded). So far customer service has been some of the worst I've ever seen, seems to depend on how you make contact (last time I called 03308083880 and was surprised to find that they were actually helpful after so many previous attempts which got me nowhere!).

Just an update, I finally got fed up with BG and moved away earlier this year to Eon Next, they bill half hourly which gets over the GMT/BST issue, they also give seven hours off peak as opposed to five with BG, and the off peak tariff was lower.

Best of luck with BG, particularly if you ever have to contact them, although it sounds like you struck lucky!
