Flight cancelled and poor option offered.

Hi MSE Experts, hope you can help.
We booked a cruise and stay through a local travel agent but the outbound flight has been moved from the Friday afternoon to the Saturday meaning we would miss the cruise which sails the next day.
We are been told that the only option we have is to accept a later flight with a different airline which is not direct and does land until 1.30am the next morning.
our issue is that we could be delayed on the 1st flight and miss the second and that we will not get to see much of the place we where going before the cruise.
There are other flights from Manchester that day or the day before for the same or slight more money and we have told them we don't mind paying an increase (within reason) but they are not budging.
Are we within our rights to ask for a refund of this single flight and book another ourselves?, like I say it was booked as a package and is protected by ATOL and ABTA.
Any assistance is appreciated.
