EDF energy hub says my fridge/freezer is costing £26 per month to run?

That's a quarter of my monthly use. The compressor is working fine, not running constantly or excessively and it's just a bog standard small freestanding unit. Any one have any idea how they work out what my energy use is with different items in the home? Because apparently I'm also spending £24 a week on lighting even though it's a small 2 bed with energy saving light bulbs and I'm only home 3-4 nights per week.

Sorry, that's £24 per month not per week!

EDF Energy Hub makes a guess at what your appliances use, based on youe smart meter data and what it expects to see for a typical household.
If you think yours is running fine, there's unlikely to be a problem. There must be something else using energy at unsociable hours (when EDF might think that the only appliances in use are fridges and freezers).

Sorry, I'm not familiar with EDF Energy hub but I'm not sure how they can work out the usage of individual appliances?

One easy way to check would be to invest in a Energy Monitoring Plug (Can pick them up for a tenner) and check your usage through that. I think £24 might not be crazy for a massive fridge, but above average for sure.

You've been looking at the energy hub haven't you !

EDF don't know - they are guessing  based on some survey or other. There is no way they know how much you use in cooking , heating or anything.

Its similar to all the other rubbish "guess your appliance use based on a handful of questions" models.   Its completely made up based on assumptions.

About ten years ago, I was involved in some research to try and make that type of hub give sensible answers - 'fingerprinting' appliances by looking at the distortions they created in the electricity supply.

Even by fitting extremely accurate recorders into individual sockets and circuits we still couldn't get it to work - so anything that claims to do it without extra kit is guessing.

You mean a kit such as this:

Octopus had a promotion on this kit some years ago. It requires access to the consumer box and space for CT clamps.

Having been away from home for a couple of months and knowing exactly what appliances are on, using both the Bright app and the EDF Energy hub, my small to medium size fridge/freezer set at 6C for the fridge and -16C for the freezer has used 19.25 kWh/month maintaining those temperatures in an east facing kitchen without the door being opened at all.

At my current tariff this equates to £6.48 for a 31 day month.

A larger fridge freezer set to the ideal 4/-18 with the door constantly in use could easily use your £24/month.

Before you all rip me apart about how I worked this out, I can see from the data the fridge cycling on and off and the base load without that only comprises the fridge itself, power to a boiler which hasn't fired up last month and the control circuit for a garage door opener which is not being used.

Therefore the three appliances (including the fridge) that are sitting there when the compressor is off use 0.48 kWh/day.

Daily usage for last month has averaged 1.1 kWh/day so that is how I have calculated the fridge has been using 0.62 kWh/day which does not take into account the power to run the control circuit as I cannot identify how much of the "background" 0.48 kWh is attributable to the fridge, so my calculation will be slightly low.

My home is located in SW Scotland and temperature in the house has not been below 10C but the kitchen does not get very warm, so the OP will probably have warmer room where their fridge has to work a bit harder too.
