Could it be an immobiliser button that immobilises the car if you don't press it within so many seconds of starting it up? I remember my brother fitting an immobiliser button in his BMW many years ago, except he put it under the seat. You had to reach under the seat to press it about 5 minutes after setting off. Something stupid like that.

Can you tell from the service history which garage knows the car?  Might be worth asking them if by any chance they have records or remember the button.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

Ah I remember those days of the DIY 'hidden' immobiliser switch - I'm guessing your brother may also have had a removable radio/CD player as well! But no, I think that the button's very prominent position, plus the fact that the car has never been immobilised, rules that theory out...

Good thought... I'm away at the moment but will check in a couple of days when back.

Did it belong to a j bond. ?, perhaps it rotates the number plates, or makes smoke or an oil slick from the back..?, even might be the button that activates the machine guns !, handy for those just stop oil protesters.

Does it switch on/off the usb port or 12v socket, or activate bluetooth pairing? I would expect a purpose linked to power or audio given it's location. It may be worth a post on a fiesta owners forum/group as if done DIY the owner may have followed a guide from one of those.
