Hello. I am about to make a week's trip to Spain and I was looking for insurance for older passengers with pre-existing conditions. I have an ongoing respiratory condition and I'm on antibiotics, and the quote I received from one company was over £800 for a single trip! Since neither my health condition nor the treatment are likely to cause problems abroad and I am covered by the GHIC I am wondering if there is a way to buy baggage insurance only. The only alternative is not to declare my existing medical issue and hope that if my baggage goes missing I can claim on that. Any advice welcome, thank you.

If you don't declare medical issues on travel insurance and make a claim for anything you risk getting it rejected as you have omitted a major item and that usually makes the whole insurance null and void.

I suspect that you only get baggage cover as part of a wider insurance.

I doubt you could get baggage insurance separately from travel insurance.

However, what you could do is send your baggage to your hotel in Spain from the UK (and send it back to your house from Spain) with a service such as DHL instead of taking it as baggage on the flight. Couriers such as DHL will automatically have insurance in case your bag goes missing in transit. Then, your home/contents insurance might cover your belongings while you're in Spain.

It's not perfect, but may be worth considering?

Do you really need to insure the baggage? If I'd insured my bags every time I travelled I'd be well out of pocket.

You must declare pre-existing conditions, but you can then ask the insurer to exclude those conditions from any claim. This should bring your premium down.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I realise if I don't declare pre-existing conditions that would make any claim null and void. I guess I will take a chance with the baggage. Cross fingers.

What about cancellation, death, death of a loved one, an accident abroad  hospital costs, repatriation off you, dead or alive and another hundred things that need insuring against.
Pure  adness not to be fully covered

Do you have "personal possessions cover" on you home insurance?
You may well already be covered.

However travelling without insurance is mad
What happens if you end up in jail?
    break a leg etc?
    have to cancel?

Can insurers (legitimately) do that? I thought they couldn't where it was something irrelevant to the claim.

Yes, if it was deliberate misrepresentation.
