Energy Refund Credits. Are they real?

I have queried a charge on my Energy Statement with British Gas.
I had a large credit balance and in Nov 2022 & Feb 2023 they refunded approx £137 to my bank account. Excellent.

BUT, in my Energy Statement for the period they have charged £43 Gas, £477 Elec and added the £137 as well. 
Surely my Energy costs are simply £43 + £477.
How is that a "refund" if they then charge it back to me?

I have talked at length to B. Gas and was told "That's what we always do".

Look at your statement detail.

Does it start with the "large credit balance", then show a debit of £137 that they refunded you, then the charge for gas and electricity?

They haven't charged you for the refund, they've just deducted it from your credit balance. Probably.

Yes, I had a credit balance of £600+
Ahh, that now makes sense if I just consider 'balances'. 
The confusing part (for me anyway) has been that I have a number of Statements covering different but sometimes overlapping time periods. The 'refunds' are in a yet another time frame.
