What is the best Annual Car Rental Excess insurance?

Are there any policies that cover
  • Car clubs like Zipcar, Enterprise, Hertz
  • Platforms like Getaround, Turo, Easycar, where some/all of the available vehicles are being rented "peer to peer" (i.e. by private individuals rather than rental companies).
Even better if it can be bundled with personal car breakdown support cover (which covers whatever rental car the person is renting at the time)

Related point:  Are "peer to peer" car rental platforms safe (when the car offered is from a private individual rather than a company offering availability via peer to peer;  I know of at least one small independent rental company that offers on getaround--they are clear that they are a company rather than an individual)

  • OK--this post got transferred from the Ask an Expert list for (Travel) in June 2023

I currently have a policy with Reducemyexcess (have had for a few years, claimed once for a small claim not at fault, promptly paid)

But reducemyexcess do not cover Car clubs or Peer to Peer, hence my question (so I don't have to go round all the providers asking the same questions....)

I don't see an exclusion for that in Direct Car Excess policies. I've only checked the IPID, not the full policy document.
  • Hmm--maybe not for Direct.  from full policy document

Rental Company - A car rental company or agency, which must be fully licensed with the regulatory authority of the country, state or local authority in which the car rental company or agency operates

Will need to ask them for specific clarification.

Also, a consideration for peer to peer, maybe car club (although would be an issue for dodgy rental companies as well, probably needing a small claims court action)
Travelling in a rental car without a current and valid test certificate, a rental car in an un-roadworthy condition at the time of the accident or where there is no motor insurance covering the rental car.
And the Direct policy has a number of other unfair exclusions (e.g. pollution due to loss of fluids, damage due to smoke, wind, hail, lightning, vermin, insects, terrorism, protests) which probably makes the policy unattractive anyway.

All of these points is precisely why I wanted this as an MSE "ask the expert" response, ideally leading to a full article on the website, instead of taking several days to look at each provider (and probably contact tem) before I renew in a couple of months time.

I see that Which have recently published a comparison (accessible without membership on their website) but that doesn't address the Car club/peer to peer point). The in-laws have membership to Which, I might get them to ask Which to see they can get clarification as a follow up to the recent web article.

All you'll find here is a random set of blokes (and girls) on the internet. If you need an expert you need to talk to a broker, if you can still find such a person.

No broker is going to bother to sell a policy that typically costs under £100, often under £50.

MSE had advertised a "ask the expert" question submission event on travel, so one of the MSE employees would answer, but my question didn't make the cut and got shuffled into this forum.

And one of my followup comments (pointing to a comparison table from another consumer organisation, that, although had some useful analysis, didn't answer the question either) got moderated out.
