Buying air tickets from an agent.

Under what circumstances (if any) is it sensible to buy air tickets from an agent rather than directly from the airline, and when doing this how can one protect oneself?
(As an example, the airlines in Turkey have websites that do not work when I try to use them. And of course sometimes agents offer fares that seem lower than those available when buying directly.)
