Just found out my car was ex rental, will cazoo take it?

Hi guys.

I was looking to sell my car to cazoo, in order to clear finance as I'm in positive equity, and using that money to get another car. I've had it for 3 years now on finance.

I was shopping round a few car places online and offered my car in px to a dealership (not cazoo an actual trader dealership) just to see how much they'd give me. All I gave was my reg and they came back and said 'we can see your car was a rental in its early life'

How did they find this info out from a reg? I can't find it anywhere online that it was that? Do dealers have access to these things that the general public don't? I brought it direct from a vauxhall dealer and they didn't tell me it was an ex rental. It also doesn't say it on the v5c either.

Anyway, the cazoo terms and conditions say they don't buy a car if it was a rental, I had no idea it was and now I've booked in with them to collect my car in two days time(home collection)

Would cazoo have done these checks beforehand or will they do them on my doorstep? Going to be pretty embarrassing if they reject it on my door if they say it was an ex rental, which I had no idea about by the way!

Anyone got experience of selling to cazoo and the process?

Thanks

Some reg no blocks are known to be daily rental or manufacturer 'fleet' cars.  Don't sweat it - you've had the car for three years, they won't be bothered.  As long as you haven't been running a daily rental service on the side you'll be fine...

Virtually every 6-9 month old car for sale is an ex rental (or an ex demonstrator).

They shouldn't be able to get any history from previous owners, so they are either guessing by the registration plate or their chain may have been involved in the rental transaction, either selling it to the rental company or buying it from the rental company.

It shouldn't make any real difference to the trade in price.
  • There is not necessarily anything wrong with ex-rentals. Often they are driven carefully by renters anxious not to have a scape with all the hassle that entails. Also rental cars are likely to have been serviced correctly. My son had an ex-rental car that served him well for many years.

On the flip side, it's well-known that rental cars are the only cars where it's possible to practice clutch-less gear changes :D

The only ex-rental we've had was a torque converter auto for this reason ;)

There are different types of "rental" cars, "rental" is code for "leased by a company".

Some are allocated to one driver, some are used as pool cars, some for driving instruction, some are rental in the conventional sense.

The less than a year old ones tend to be very high mileage for their age, which is why they are got rid of.

We were assured by the salesman that ours was "a directors car" (must have been a cheap company, putting the directors in a vauxhall!) it had 20,000 miles on it at about 9 months old. It was no more trouble than any other vauxhall.

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

My Octavia is an ex-Europcar hire car. Bought it at just under a year old in 2017 with 11000 miles on it. Went past 90000 miles last week - never had any problem with it whatsoever. It’s been serviced according to the manufacturers schedule and has return a measured 60.1 mpg over those 79000 miles.

I don't think I've ever seen a car registered to a hire company that wasn't at least a "managers car" which is usually at least plausible.
