Car rental in Japan seems to be expensive. How can I get it cheaper than advertised on rental company websites?

Also: Having a car rental excess insurance policy may make the overall cost cheaper, as you can then safely decline taking top up insurance packages (although you will need sufficient credit limit on credit cards to cover any enhanced deposit charged, and will need to pay any damages "out of pocket" to the rental company and claim back afterwards; many excess insurances will cover the full amount of any damages where most top-ups offered by rental company will reduce the excess but not eliminate it.)
You may also want to ensure you have some sort of legal insurance in case of an accident that is considered "driver at fault" or other potential contravention of driving laws, as the legal system in Japan applies extreme pressure for admission of guilt rather than to presume innocence until guilty, so you would need to have good local legal representation right away.0 -
Thanks, I speak Japanese and know the local laws. The issue is that if you live in Japan you can get massive discounts by joining loyalty programs and the like, but if you are a tourist they aren't available to you.
I was hoping there would be some offers or something I could take up in the UK that get me cheaper rental overseas. Something like that.0
