Best/Safest way to send money from the Sale of French Property back to the UK

I've recently reached retirement after working and living in France the past 13 years. Just going through with the sale of my apartment before relocating back to the UK... I've seen the value of my life saving being reduced daily over the last 4 weeks due to a strengthening pound. Soon I'll have to transfer the money from the sale back to the UK. I've read transferring between Banks can be very expensive losing thousands, and that Money Transfer Companies are the way to go. But worried sick about transferring by a third party. Could anyone recommend the best way/company to transfer? Any help will be much appreciated.

Wise (Formerly TransferWise) seems to be the most well established and respected one.
You would first need a UK bank account.1 -
We came back a few years ago after 17 years in France and used Currencies direct, we split the total into several £50k lots as unlike banks these companies can fail.

Our solicitor in Spain sent the money direct from his Client Account to our English bank account. I don't know however whether this was the best way. Exchange rates were almost at parity at the time (spring 2012).1

I have used Caxton FX to send money from the UK to other bank accounts in the EU, and found them reliable and reasonable on exchange rates. Not sure if they work the other way though
