Car / home insurance increases - more than expected?

So i looked at the wife's poilicy first. She was £170 last year and got bumped up to £255 on a Churchill multicar policy. When i phoned them they reduced to £211 with a loyalty reduction. However, just went with Budget off a moneysupermarket quote for £155. Pretty much identical policy with same add ons and excesses etc. So actually got iit for ess than last year.johnbhoy70 said:Just off the phone to Churchill and they've knocked off nearly £105 over both me and my wife's policies. So roughly now about £495. They've saved these on the system for me for now but i will still follow up a couple of the lower quotes on the comparisons. Beam look quite a bit lower than the rest which might be a bit suss but alongside the quote it mentions they've currently got reduced rates for comparethemarket. We'll see. Will maybe look at cashback too.
By the way does anyone if there a list of specialists in multicar where you're likely to get a competitive quote?
Just ignore above folks just found a bit about multicar in main car insurance article
I'll look at mine tomorrow or the next day or two.0 -
Settled with Beam/AA for my car at £268. So with the missus at £155 with Budget that's £423 compared to the multicar quote from current insurer Churchill of £596. Last year it was £394 for both. Not too bad and i might get topcashback of £38 for going through MSM. We'll see about but that but that'd be a bonus.
A couple of points i did note. When i went through to Beam from MSM comparison it cost me an extra £15 to get personal accident cover which had showed as included in my quote on comparison. I had every on it other than breakdown as i get that with bank.
However, even though i had entered £100 voluntary excess on comparison i tried to reduce this on Beam site to see how it would affect premium. Surprisingly it didn't even when i reduced to 0 so went ahead with so now have no voluntary excess. I noticed this too on a quote many years ago. So a wee win there0 -
I ended up being £370ish for one car that was £260 or so last year. I just couldn't get it cheaper without dropping levels of cover.johnbhoy70 said:Settled with Beam/AA for my car at £268. I had spotted in the past that lowering the excess sometimes has little effect (perhaps due to age, loads of no claims, etc) so I'm on a negligible amount too.0 -
Any particular reason for wanting a mini PA policy attached to your car insurance?johnbhoy70 said:

I remember when first doing my claims training they did the old pizza analogy of TPO being the base, TPFT the tomato and Comp being all the toppings with AD cover, windscreen, PA, personal possessions etc. When we came to learn the IT system I asked the trainer on how you put the PA claim through as it was the only thing she didnt touch on. Her answer was that in 20 years of being a claims handler she'd never done one and didnt know but would come back to me (she never did)
Obviously in todays age of price being everything Comp is more like a margherita pizza... sure you got the cheese with it but if you want the ham or pineapple etc those are now optional extras with a cost.0 -
Fair enough question i suppose. I did hum and haw over it but my Churchill policy had it in as part of the fully comp policy so didn't want to drop it. I was going through Topcashback to MSM and just wanted it out the way. I did a quick google but just kept it on anyway. They also offered a new one on me which was excess protection which i didn't select. In hindsight, based on what you've said i probably wouldn't have taken it knwoing what i do now. However, to be fair, i don't have experie ce of claims stats in the industry.DullGreyGuy said:

The add on versions tend to be better than what is included in Comp as standard but still relatively token... with our built in one it would only payout if you lost a limb or an eye and total permanent disablement was £15k or such.johnbhoy70 said:

There are excess insurance policies out there, the two things with them to be careful is 1) what happens if the claim is below the excess value, some only payout if you actually pay the excess which you dont if its below the excess 2) because of negative selection having a high excess can actually increase your premiums. Unfortunately some people dont check properly and take a £2,000 excess and a excess policy thinking they're saving loads but in reality they've paid more for their policies than they needed and a claim for £1,999 will mean they get nothing at all from either policy.0 -
I think what kinda annoyed me more than anything was the fact that MSM had it ticked in the column before i hit the insurers site. I had selected everything NCD, windscreen, legal blah blah but deliberately left out breakdown as i have that with bank.
The excess was an easy decision as i'd managed to reduce it from £100 to 0 without it affecting the premium. I thought i knew a bit about these thingt after doing it for so many years but it's the proverbial minefield.
ps- just had a look at what i'd bought on that accident plan. £100k for limb losses or other losses for policyholder and £60k for other insureds. Still wish i hadn't bought it now. lIve and learn.
Never has the phrase time/effort versus reward been more appropriate these days. For me anyway0 -
Last year I paid £395, this year, with less mileage, one more year's NCB, and otherwise changing nothing, the cheapest quote I've found is £572, and I've followed all the tips on the MSE Compare+ tool. That's 46% up on last year. I know inflation has been high, but this is quite a jump.1

Too late for you now, but I’m presently with Admiral with combined car/home policies. Renewal in at £624/£205 (last year £335/£155) so big increases on last year, especially the car. Hunted around, seems this is in line with industry increases. Just off the phone from them, dropped the car by £140 and home, £16. Renewal up in a few weeks so not paid anything yet, may call back nearer the time to see if these really are the final figures 😏Mosh said:

I am still with Admiral as well. I managed a smaller reduction than that - I think I got them down £50-ish on the car and more on the house. House was by far the cheapest I could get, I could only get the car down about a fiver going elsewhere so I stayed. Unbelievable increases.baser999 said:

The figures I got after the first call were their final ones. I tried two more times and they'd not budge even after I "cancelled" the renewal. Wouldn't even drop the car a further fiver to ensure they kept a customer.0
