50 mins is plenty of time to connect at Schiphol on a through booking with KLM/partners, with origin and destination both non-Schengen (so no immigration).

Deplaning what is presumably a large fullish flight, potentially bussing to the terminal, transiting across Schipol, getting through passport control to the non-Schengen area... I don't think I'd be comfortable with a 50 minute connection at AMS.

It's certainly doable if the gods are in agreement, but it's also something that could easily be screwed up by the slightest delay anywhere. I'd say 1h30 would be my personal comfort zone.

If it was a big price difference and no real downside to me I might risk it and then just assume there's a good chance ill be bumped to the next flight
I've passed through AMS over 150 times in past few years - mainly with a sub-1hr connection and often involving bus to the remote stands - in that time I've missed 3 connections (and in 2 of those I still arrived in final destination within 3hrs so that compensation wasn't payable) - much better odds in my experience than transferring in LHR

My record is 20mins from doors open on arriving flight to doors closed on connection
As I said it's definitely doable but it would stress me out so I'd just avoid it unless it was absolutely necessary. I used to use Schipol all the time (been a few years though) and it wasn't totally out of the known to take 30 minutes plus to get from touchdown to the terminal. I'd rather just spend an hour or two in the airport and have a coffee than have to be hurrying to get somewhere.

And this bit was my only uncertainty - I know there's no immigration but seem to recall they were planning security checks between long-haul arrivals and transferring flights - close to the area where the old Crown Lounge used to be - but not sure whether this is for all arriving flights and, if so, it's time impact

Thank you so much for your replies. I haven't booked yet. Just going through all the different sites looking. Looking at what you've said I'm probably best booking direct with KLM so I'm covered if anything goes wrong and I'm delayed.
Don't do anything but book direct, on a single booking.
Its one ticket @CKhalvashi not one booking... I can book a dozen different unrelated flights on one booking using an agency but all are different tickets.

Did I not also say book direct only?

There is no need for agencies for such reservations. A single trip should have a single PNR with a passenger being willing to accept the risk if this isn't the case. Such agencies are flying thinly in consumer laws IMO.

We then get down to individual airlines and if they operate a "basket" type concept on their website @CKhalvashi but still with some you can have multiple tickets on one booking.

There are agencies and agencies... some do add value to bookings hence when our and our friend's Air France flight was cancelled we were sitting on our replacement flight organised by our agent at Air France's expense whilst our friends were still sat in the queue to speak to Air France

If they have in fact implemented such additional security checks they are likely to be efficient and well-manned, perhaps with fast lane for those with minimal hand luggage, and not a serious holdup. That is at least usual at Schiphol, which can't always be said for immigration process.
In any case, as per your original query, if you are prevented from making it in time for your onward flight for no fault of your own, and there can always be a delay in your incoming flight etc, there are plenty of strategically located transfer desks where you will be well taken care of and booked on the next available onward flight, meal voucher and/or hotel stay if appropriate.
