How long to wait for a RM Returned to Sender parcel

A buyer messaged me three days after purchase saying they didn't want the item they'd bought, and by that time it had long been posted. I didn't have time to reply straight away before they messaged again an hour or so later to say they refused the parcel (same day they messaged).
I can see on RM tracking it's been refused and returned to sender but there's no tracking. This was last Tuesday. Any ideas how long it typically takes for delivery back to me and I'm guessing Royal Mail need to put a new label with a new tracking # on it, which I'm also guessing isn't synced with the previous tracking details? TIA.

Did you put your address on it? If not it goes into a vast pile of return to sender but no sender identified. There was a form to fill out to ask them to look for it but the chap I spoke to at RM was honest and said the hit rate was very low because of the vast volumes.1

Yes, it was an eBay label prefilled with both buyer and seller address so my address is on there.....I've just never had a return to sender before (dozens of normal returns). Unsure if it matters too much but we both live in major cities.
Now I wish I'd messaged the buyer as soon as I saw his message as it's a reasonably expensive item and ask to take it in then return using the ebay return label for Tracked 48, albeit a little inconvenient for the buyer (item cost me about £80 so should still be covered for loss being Tracked 48 I'm guessing?).
However, the timeline for RTS seems quite long - so now I have to refund the guy and wait and hope the item is returned, not great as I'm heading abroad for work and play over the summer and no one home to accept delivery. I just hope it's delivered by Saturday 17th when I leave.0
