I would assume the answer is yes simply because the noise of the flexi handle hitting the ground could easily spook a nervous dog- and then the clattering was following the dog too- even worse.

So, actually just dropping an ordinary lead might not have resulted in the same scenario.

A flexi lead would drag behind a running dog and slow down or make them stop. Easier to catch a dog with a trailing flexi lead.
A friend of mine dropped his dogs fixed lead, when they were startled, it ran into the road, the road was clear.

I disagree. My dog's long fixed lead I leave trailing behind him when we're in a field and I can just stand on it to stop him if he's not close enough to grab (recall is a work in progress.) That doesn't really work so well with a flexi lead and if the catch isn't on it just winds itself in anyway.
My dog trainer wouldn't allow flexi leads in class. She said people rely on it too much hoik the dog in rather than teaching the dog anything, and also they don’t allow proper control when compared to a normal walking lead.

You obviously dont use a flexi lead, because what happens is the handle part of the lead trails way behind because of the grass, even if it did fully rewind, the dog is inhibited from moving because the handle is hanging

I have used Flexi leads in the past so am perfectly well aware of how they work.  It’s because I’ve tried them that I know if you have got a large strong dog the  handle doesn’t inhibit them from doing anything.

I find flexi leads ok, so I guess my dog is well-trained compared to fixed lead owners.
  • I switch between the two but I do prefer my fixed lead as I feel that I can hold it more securely and with less conscious effort than my flexi. I don't use the flexi on pavement walks, only when doggo can explore a bit more as I prefer him to stay close on a pavement walk anyway. I use a Halti lead with two clips so it can be attached to both D-rings on my dog's harness, used at three different lengths and easily clipped to a bench when I visit the pub. Great lead.

Thank you for the laugh. Brightened up my afternoon no end.

A fixed long line with the handle round your wrist is not newrly as likely to be dropped and a large plastic box.

The dropped flexi obviously didn't slow down the dog in the case quoted.

My trained dogs didn't need a flexi. They walked on a normal fixed collar and were responsive to being recalled when off lead.

Until then  they were walked on a fixed lead or a long line where appropriate.
