    Never seen that before?

Sorry, I'm not sure who you're replying to, whether it's me or someone else.

Also, apologies to you and everyone for my rant. Not helpful.

Due to the migration of tax credit claimants, my neighbour has stopped her tax credits claim in order not to be migrated over (she also gets IRESA). I find it tragic that she is prepared to lose £120+ a week in credits for her very young children out of fear of being moved to UC, which will inevitably happen anyway for everyone claiming legacy benefits. She claims she doesn't want to lose her Severe Disability Premium but she's worst off anyway because the TCs were more money. She's basically just living off her ESA money for one person and CB, it's so sad.
You have to wonder how many people are doing this purely of the basis of media stories about people losing out by being migrated to UC, rather than checking the eligibility checker to see if they would be better off or not...
It really is a shame people do things like the above. 🤬

I agree that words matter but it's difficult. When things work as intended, as the majority of UC claims do, it's not really news worthy in comparison to when things have gone wrong possibly leading to the impression that UC is all bad as that is all that gets reported. Quite how you square that circle I don't know.

My particular bug bear is "Bedroom Tax".
Call it whatever you want, a spare room subsidy, bedroom deduction, a punishingly mean policy etc.  please just don't call it a tax. On more than one occasion I've seen people worried they needed to pay a tax because they had spare bedrooms even though not in receipt of any means tested benefit.
