Camp America!!

Dunno if this is the right place so sorri if it aint..

Aniway..I've been thinking alot about joining up to Camp America..it looks completely awesome and really does look like the experiance of a lifetime..is it too good to be true???

It costs around £400..But I mean you practically get double..even triple your money back in expenses after Travel, Accommadation, Food and you gotta mention the $300 something you get after to travel about for a month or so!!

I'm seriously considering it but also worried about what could hold me back..Things like my depression, aspergus, age..I dont wanna miss out on a great chance for me to get out there cause of all tht..

Anybody got any advice about this..maybe some alternatives or amoneysaving student has been with them and can point me in the right direction??..any help wud be greatly appriciated. :j

  • Have you ever been prescribed anti depressants? That could make you ineligible.
  • hey, 2 of my friends went on camp america and they absolutely loved it. One of my friends is going back again next year.

In terms of pointing you in the right direction. You can go to their website www.campamerica.co.uk or email enquiries@campamerica.co.uk for more specific info about whether you are elgible.

  • That's all right then. I went with CCUSA as it was cheaper than Camp America.

Why do you question your age? You have to be over 18 in the May of the year you go.

They may have a problem with the depression and aspergus, unfortunately, but if you apply and be honest it should be okay, you just might end up in a smaller camp.

It's definitely not a money maker though, the money you get you'll need to live on. Most people have taken about £500 - £1k extra with them. It's about experience not money.

A friend of mine went last year or maybe two years ago and he had an amazing time. He broke even after the money he made and after the travelling he did.

He wrote like a blog/fanzine of it which I could get off him if you want to read it?

CCUSA or BUNAC will give you the exact same thing as Camp America but at half the price, and will give you more wages at the end of it. You can't go for the money though, because you won't make any!

Camp America automatically reject anyone who has been diagnosed with depression, but I don't know about the other companies. It might make a difference depending on when your last episode was and if you can plead your case well enough. As for Aspergers, I think it will depend on how bad it is. Some companies ask you to be 18, I think BUNAC say 19, but I'm not sure. Best thing to do would be to e-mail the companies and ask if they'd accept you. Although at this time of year they might be busy so could take a while to reply.

If I were you I'd wait and apply for summer 2009, that way you can take advantage of the early bird fees and also it gets your application out sooner, so you have more chance of being placed. It also gives you nearly a year to save money.

Dunno about that, but I DO know somebody with a criminal record for arson who applied and was accepted and subsequently went.

    He had a great time.

I don't see why the Aspergers would be a problem. although I will admit that everybody on the ASC scale has different behaviours so maybe some of your behaviours are not conducive to being in that environment.

I have Aspergers and I know that one of the items on the spectrum can be noise. I could not be around children at all because the noise they make hits my anxiety button within 2 seconds, and within 5 seconds I have become irrational and start exhibiting odd behaviour (panicky and want to run away to where it's nice and quiet). This also, for me, applies to any form of sport, where crowds are cheering, chanting and shouting.

So I have to avoid the triggers of: excitement and enjoyment :)
  • I was woindering about my age because imma onli 17 at the moment.
