Oh lordy, I still have my "ERNIE" ceramic money box my dad gave me in 1956 or so.

My first bank as a child was Barclays and they had a metal moneybox with separate compartments for each type of coin. When you couldn't fit any more money in you would take it to the bank where they would unlock it and add the money to your account. However, when I had just got used to using it, my parents decided to switch to Lloyds where their money box was just a black plastic horse's head which you could open yourself and take the money back out again.

I had a Lloyds moneybox that would sort the money for you. You'd put the coin in a slot and it would roll down a track and fall into the appropriate section when it got to the hole that was the right size. It had markings on the front so you could see the value of the coins.

Edit: it was one of these

Banks coming into schools sounds really cool. I wish that still happened now - people might have some clue about their money then.

It does still happen in our local area. At least it did about 5 years ago when my youngest was in primary school. I guess it may have stopped now though as our local branch has closed down.

Year 6 kids were able to apply for roles in the school bank, such as cashier, treasurer etc and had to have an interview to get the job. On opening their HSBC account, they got a safe-style money box and could pay in money at their school bank each week.

It is a great marketing tool. Both my elder daughter and her boyfriend bank with HSBC even now, despite going to different primary schools, and I imagine that the majority of teens in our area have an HSBC current account.
