Canned fish in tomato sauce? With bread or crackers. Or if she doesn’t eat meat I recommend mashed canned chickpeas mixed with mayonnaise/salad cream, onion (red or spring both work well), season to taste which can include a little whole grain mustard. Capers, carrot, pepper, cucumber, pickles etc also welcome additions so it’s very adaptable depending on what you have to hand. Lovely in a sandwich or just straight out of the bowl.Best wins; GoPro, £2K, Brittany week, festival tix twice, Bath break, Sweden spa break, iPhone x2, £250 Amazon x2, tech bundle, 55" TV, Haven break, £1K, Smeg mixer, 3 night spa break, Greenhouse, posh tent, house plants, 2 pairs boots, posh mattress, year tailored supps, £250 lingerie, £150 buyagift, £250 hotel7

I think spam may be welcome with a bean salad. In the same vein I'd say tinned fish maybe in a sauce for a bit of variety. I'm sure I got some long life pots of tuna with a mixed bean type of thing a few years ago but not sure if these are still available. I suppose if you are stuck without power for a few days you'd eat whatever you could.6

I know they are not the best, but what about the dried pots of rice, pasta or noodles that you add boiling water to? Can boil a bit of water in a pan in the yard if need be.Saving 1 animal wont change the world - but it will change the world for that 1 animal

Tinned fish! Of Course! "D'oh" & other quotes from Homer. Mum is an omnivore - being a war baby meant she never was encouraged to be picky about her food & then as a medic even more robust on a Balanced Diet. I shall suggest tinned mackerel in sauce as an easy 'bash with fork, apply to crackers, ingest' meal. Adding chickpeas is doable, but may puzzle her a bit, cold. Still, as a change from beans, I am sure it'll be welcomed!
I confess I hadn't thought of Pot Noodle etc as the Scout Movement is rather strict on not letting the young off on expedition without Proper Food & therefore the Pot Noodle is barred. Yet every year at Jamboree on the Internet I chat with Scout leaders who have a tin of sardines or similar in their coat pocket as standard. And so I carry a tin in my workbag for a few months until the next tidyout... I should move the tin into my In Case Of Emergency rucksack, with a metal spork!
If she has to, I fear mum Will venture into the back garden to try to brew up to make coffee - I need to reword my warning to sis as to the relative speed with which we get the gas rings sorted. There are so many concerns like fire, balance, carrying cold water, carrying boiling water & possibly leaving the whole set up still going as soon as the cafetiere is good to go (mum is eighty-something & has been a coffee drinker for a good sixty of those).8 -
Nice to see the forum lively again...I've an old fashioned sideboard/cupboard in hallway...extra tins bought goes in there first..to aid rotation to kitchen cupboards...I've not reviewed my bug out bag in 10 years or so..good reminder..you all take care in these uncertain times8

Given the choice between that & caffeine withdrawal, I think she'd take to canned chilled coffee in seconds. Doesn't stop her chucking half-full cups of the good stuff down the sink when its gone cold (she does microwave them sometimes, often removing a previous heated & forgotten brew to do so). She just much prefers it hot!Floss said:DfV, would your mum do chilled coffee? There are several options in cans.

I love this! She has my sympathy. Whoever invents a 'drink me' reminder brew will be onto a good thing!DigForVictory said:

My dad used to make a cup of Nescaff 3in1 every morning. He would drink half, let the rest cool down then top up again with hot water and milk 3 or 4 times during the day! There wasn't much coffee left by the end! 😂DigForVictory said:

I suspect she could, I had infinitely rather she didn't! Camping stoves tend to be near the ground & mum isn't as flexible as she used to be, hence me nudging sis to get the gas rings (built in beside the electric cooker) sorted & signed off as safe. If that doesn't happen, then I hope that her carer could keep a thermos of boiling water for her so mum need not remember to turn the gas off.MrsCD said:

What worries me is what mum might 'get up to' in the window of daily time off a residential carer gets!
For me it's easy - if there's no electricity, I turn the water off, lock up & book into a travel lodge (the lads might complain but Wherever I go, I'll snore). Mum's been in that house over 50 years - she knows where every step & switch are even three-quarters asleep & with her hearing aids out. Us daughters are unanimous that we'll do our best to keep her there as she won't uproot and thrive, so we're scheming to keep her as happy & comfortable as we can there.10
