Sometimes nature throws up an exceptionally large specimen. It happened to us with a sowing of Astrantia seed. One stood out as larger than the others and we eventually named it 'Hagrid.' However, size isn't everything; 15 years on, we don't have Hagrid where he was interplanted with others. We still have 'Buckland,' that has  proved longer-lived and therefore dominant.

    Castor oil?

I don’t think it’s that either.  If you haven’t identified it over the next 2 weeks let me know, we have a communal garden and the boss of the gardening firm who looks after it is brilliant at plant ID

There’s a hollyhock called ‘Fig-leaved hollyhock’ Alcea ficifolia, I’ve seen it in seed catalogues, never grown it.

Come back and tell us if/when it flowers!

Ooh nice. I promise to return once it blooms.  It looks like the flower buds are beginning to form.

I have, but it was so long ago, I'd forgotten! :|
Better info from this company I used before Brexit:
They're less prone to rust, but if I remember correctly, that doesn't mean free from it.

I wonder if the ‘fresh start’ from cutting back to the ground helps the plant to outrun the rust.
