smart meter

Dear Martin team,

Please could you help us, we receive a letter from EON next stating the radio teleswitch service (rts ) will be turned off for good next year. They said we have to have a smart meter, we don’t want a smart meter as our right to refuse, however Eonnext doesn’t have the economy 7 timer clock therefore we must have their smart meter. I agreed that’s ok but ask them to dumb down the smart meter, their response was NO as we have WAN (wide area network) in our area and they will not dumb down the smart meter.

What are my rights and shall I complain to ofgem?

  • This is the official policy imposed on suppliers by Ofgem - the Regulator. As stated above, suppliers are allowed to fit smart meters without the consumer’s approval.

What are your worries about smart meters OP? It might be worth setting out your reservations as there are a lot of myths perpetuated about them which simply aren't true, and it might be that your mind and concerns can be set at rest with a bit of factchecking via the knowledgeable folk here.

You don't have a right to refuse, and they have a right to fit a smart meter.

Maybe following EH's approach would be a better idea here.
  • A further thought for the OP. To run your heating, there must be a time source. The Radio Teleswitch gets its time signal from a radio station. Your smart meter will need to be connected to the network to get its time source.

It is also worth making the point that smart meter communications hubs are not in constant transmission mode. They sit quietly in the background a bit like a mobile phone waiting for a call. Suppliers normally make a call once per day (30 minute profile) for usage data. You will get more radiation from adjacent home wifi networks than you will from a communications hub.
  • Hi,
jings, what's with all these 'what are my rights' questions?
You could try switching supplier, might find a better deal.
